A new FURUNO Simplified Voyage Data Recorder (S-VDR) VR-3000S complies with the IMO performance standard IMO MSC. 163 (78) as well as IEC testing standards IEC 61996-2 and IEC 60945. The S-VDR is for existing cargo vessels of 3,000 gross tonnage and upwards with a phase-in requirement schedule for those of 20,000 gross tonnage and upwards first, to be followed by others of 3,000 gross tonnage and upwards according to the revision on SOLAS Chapter V Agenda Item 20, adopted at the 79th MSC session.

S-VDR records data and events occurred during navigation, which include: date and time, ship's position, speed, heading bridge audio, communication audio, radar/ECDIS images and others, which can be utilized to assist maritime casualty investigators in identifying the causes. Also, the data can be used as future reference to further incident prevention.
