Terror Attack - Alarm Button Ship Security Alert System (SSAS)

Following the terrorist attack in New York September the 11th 2001, the IMO (Marine Safety Committee) decided and agreed new rules for international ships to provide warning signalling systems in the case of attacks on ships.

From July 1st 2004 all new buildings must be equipped with a Ship Security Alert System (SSAS). For other ships above 500 GT in international operation the Ship Security Alert System must be installed at the first Radio Survey after July 1st 2004 or, at latest, by July 1st 2006.

Should the safety of your ship's crew and passengers be threatened by a terrorist or pirate attack the (SSAS) will give your crew the means to raise the alarm, without anyone else on board knowing

The alarm signal includes the ship's identity and position and is sent to a shore based authority, which is authorised to take appropriate action.

Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) has specified the requirements SSAS. The new Ship Security Alert System SSA-1000 was developed by Furuno to meet all of those demands. SSA-1000 operates independently, with no connection to any other communication systems onboard the ship.

SSA-1000 consists antenna and one junction box with in/out ports. At the core of the system is an integrated Inmarsat C/GPS system. A special power back-up system takes over the power supply in case of disruption to the main power supply.

When the alarm is activated, the SSA-1000 transmits a message to the authorities telling tem that the security of the ship is under threat. The information gives the ship's identity and its position. This message must be absolutely unique and secure, and have no similarity to any other GMDSS alarm. The alarm signal must not be registered or referred to onboard the ship or onboard any other ships.

By using special software the ships movements can be tracked on a shore based computer screen when the alarm is activated. The same software licence can be used for all ships in the fleet.
