First there’s the man who spots the fault. It could take some time before the real fault is identified and all too often not before it inflicts further damage on related components and integrated systems.
Then there’s the call to the ships’ shore based office and the subsequent calls to arrange an engineer to go on board at the ship’s next port of call. He arrives on time, only to find he is not qualified to work on that particular make and model of equipment.

Start training ECDIS now.
If you are planning to go paperless on the bridge you will need to start training now.
IMO requirements for ECDIS are such that the equipment itself is only part of the solution. Bridge Officers will need general training, which follows the IMO’s Model Course 1.27. In addition, every ship will require equipment-specific training, according to the ISM Code.
Mandatory training will be required after 1st January 2012. Beyond this date there are two important shipping regulations, which must be followed. First, ECDIS training may be required by National Authorities for vessels in their flag registries or visiting ports.
